Fruitvale Station (2013) Synopsis :

Fruitvale chronicles the final hours of the life of Oscar Grant, the youth who was shot and killed by a BART police officer on Jan. 1, 2009 after he and his friends were pulled off a train at Oakland's Fruitvale Station in connection with an alleged fight........

Plot: The true story of Oscar, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident, who crosses paths with friends, enemies, family, and strangers on the last day of 2008. Full summary » |  »

Story: This is the true story of Oscar, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident who wakes up on the morning of December 31, 2008 and feels something in the air. Not sure what it is, he takes it as a sign to get a head start on his resolutions: being a better son to his mother, whose birthday falls on New Year's Eve, being a better partner to his girlfriend, who he hasn't been completely honest with as of late, and being a better father to T, their beautiful 4 year old daughter. He starts out well, but as the day goes on, he realizes that change is not going to come easy. He crosses paths with friends, family, and strangers, each exchange showing us that there is much more to Oscar than meets the eye. But it would be his final encounter of the day, with police officers at the Fruitvale BART station that would shake the Bay Area to its very core, and cause the entire nation to be witnesses to the story of Oscar Grant. Fruitvale Station (2013) Review by Arit

This is a good film with great acting all around, directed by anemerging, enthusiastic filmmaker. With that being said, there isnothing special about its storytelling that makes it stand out.

First, the film starts with a "Based on a true story" disclaimer, whichadds nothing but confusion to its content. The director has admittedthat 'Katie' does not represent a real-life individual but a compositeof multiple people, which implies that he has brought significantdramatization. Given that many narrative films today are inspired moreor less by true events, this opening message only makes you wonder howmuch of the story is actually true.

Second, the film ends with a sequence of text-only frames which forcesyou to read multiple pages about what happens afterwards. A simplegimmick of, for example, adding actual still images to the background,or showing newspaper headlines, would have made this sequence moreeffective. Such creativity should be a no-brainer in this digital age, when everyone is equipped with a video-capable device, ready to becomean instant YouTube correspondent in case of an emergency, as clearlydemonstrated by this very film.

Last but not least, the film refuses to make any statement or offer anynew insight, and you are eventually left to wonder what message to takeaway from it. It is a rather plain recreation of serial events, thefidelity of which is not even guaranteed. "Fruitvale" is ultimatelysaved by the splendid performances of its cast, adequate pacing, andhigh-adrenaline content, but left with much to be desired in thetop-level concept.

Fruitvale Station (2013) Review by keelab87 from Salt Lake City, UT
I knew nothing about the true story behind this film before I saw itbut Ryan Coogler did an impressive job of telling this controversialstory. Coogler takes us to the last day in 2008, and introduces us toOscar Grant's life. A young, troubled father that is trying to do theright thing by his family. This was his debut at Sundance and he didn'tdisappoint. The audience laughed when the actors laughed and shed tearswhen the actors shed tears...it was a very moving film. By the end ofthe film I felt as though I knew these people personally. The wholecast did an excellent job! I'm looking forward to hearing more aboutRyan Coogler in the future.

Fruitvale Station (2013) Review by M. Brand from United States

The premise of the movie is what drew me to this screening.Unfortunately, the storytelling was sub-par. The characters weretransparent, and without depth. The abundance of overly positive lifealtering changes of the main character was simply not believable. Weare led to believe that this once extremely flawed character is almostentirely without flaws leading up to that fateful night. The handful ofsupporting characters were lackluster, with only hints of hiddentalent. While the film had the look of a very well made student film,it didn't exactly scream out that this is a writer/director to watch.Upon leaving this screening, my only regret was that I hadn't gone to adifferent screening. On a side note; Forest Whitaker's name has beenthrown around with this film. While he is listed as a producer on thefilm (the very last producer credit), it would appear that the onlyreal association with Forest Whitaker is that the film was made becauseof a financial grant issued by him.
